Alright. This project has hit a wall and I wanted to give up on at least five different occasions. However, we have a path to move forward with.
This is not the first time a project fully halted production for a while, I have too many failed projects to count that proves that. I thought it was because I kept getting stuck on the programming aspect. I am a certified programmer now and the code is much better than it was before. It is unfortunately because of the art. The code is 90% completed, but now I have to make the game look good so that it also feels better to play. I tried hand drawn art with my graphics tablet, but it just took too much time for low quality art, especially when animating. I tried pixel art, and despite its much quicker turn over I kept finding myself hating every pixel I placed. I spent all this time programming and fully neglected to practice making game assets.
I had multiple choices to make. I thought of scrapping the project, but with how much I poured into the programming I’d rather not just leave it fully unfinished forever, yet I continue to feel a pull away from it. So I pulled up Aesprite and started just doodling for a while until I found a style that was tolerable, based on just random items and older designs for a different project.
…finally, we have SOMETHING to go off of. I swallowed my pride and got to work on making the player character and some basic animation, as well as some of the food items you’d be carrying around.
I’m really happy with the player character, but the food items still don’t fit quite well after I placed it in-engine and got it moving around. Still, it’s progress, and that’s worth celebrating. Too bad this project will go on hold for a bit as I go participate in a game jam. Wish me luck!
